My Therapy Style

Hi! My name is Dr. Mussarat Khan and I am a clinical psychologist. My approach to therapy includes gently guiding and challenging individuals to help achieve goals. I have a general structure for individual sessions that guide the treatment course overall, however, I maintain the flexibility to change directions to treatment as our lives are ever-changing. I focus on the daily application of empirically based modalities and explore what is truly important in one’s life. I approach goals collaboratively and if there is anything to take away from our sessions, it is- change is possible in a safe positive space.

Get to Know Me

Why did you become a mental health professional?

One of my biggest influences on wanting to pursue this field was a desire to help others overcome their challenges. However, the most notable is helping others with experiences of injustice. As a South Asian woman, my clinical work is influenced by my own cross-generational experiences and intersectionality. My experiences of being part of several marginalized groups have influenced my ability to view the complexity of the world we live in today. My hope is this translates to others feeling heard and accepted.

What are your interests outside of work?

I have a passion for reading and practicing meditation/mindfulness. I also love DIY projects around my home, from fixing my garbage disposal to tiling a wall. These activities help me feel centered and focus on aspects of my life where I can find joy. I often have my kids involved so they are having fun and learning new ways to keep themselves active!

What is one thing you do daily that supports your well-being?

I love to drink my one allotted cup of coffee! It certainly helps support my emotional well-being! :)

Favorite organization/non-profit?

My favorite organization/nonprofit is the Sacramento Autistic Spectrum & Special Needs Alliance. This organization provides support to parents and youth to nurture diversity and protect the uniqueness of neurodivergent individuals.
